Dear Cold Spring Families and Community,
There’s a lot to look forward to this month, and it all kicks off this week! In the spirit of our Spring Into Kindness theme, I hope everyone is finding meaningful ways to show appreciation and care for one another with small gestures that make a BIG difference. I had the joy of watching our students share kindness with each other - and also received a kindness of my own: framed pictures from the camp we offered to students during the time of the Franklin Fire from a fellow displaced parent. It is a reminder of the strength and generosity that define us as the Cold Spring School community.
I’m thrilled to share some exciting news: during last weekend’s Small School Districts’ Association (SSDA) Conference, Mr. Mike Marino was honored as the 2025 California School Board Member of the Year! This prestigious recognition from the SSDA celebrates not only Mr. Marino’s outstanding leadership at Cold Spring School District, but also his impactful work across the state. He has mentored and guided hundreds of school board members through his Governance Best Practices workshops and presentations. We are incredibly proud of him and grateful for his continued dedication to educational excellence!
Maureen, Mr. Marino, Mr. Pattison, and I returned from the conference feeling energized and inspired. It was a powerful opportunity to connect with fellow small school leaders, explore innovative practices, and reflect on how we can continue to grow and thrive as a district. We came away with a deep sense of pride in the work we’re doing together at Cold Spring.
Here on campus, the excitement continues with our beloved Move-A-Thon that takes place tomorrow! It’s always a highlight of the school year, especially for our sixth-grade students who get to enjoy the added fun of the Color Run. I look forward to seeing all the school spirit in action and capturing a joyful group photo!
In other news, Alpha AI School is launching in Santa Barbara this fall, bringing a tech-forward, innovative approach to education. If you're curious to learn more, there’s an information session happening tonight—Wednesday, April 9 at 5:00 PM. It’s a great opportunity for families interested in how AI is transforming the learning experience.
Please also join us for Principal’s Coffee on Monday, April 14 at 8:30 AM. It will be an informal and friendly space to catch up, share ideas, and talk about the latest happenings on campus.
Finally, a special shoutout to our talented chorus students, who will be heading to Knott’s Berry Farm on April 16 for a choral performance trip that promises to be both fun and memorable. We are so proud of them for representing Cold Spring with such enthusiasm and heart.
It’s a vibrant season filled with connection, celebration, and continued growth. Thank you for being such an integral part of our Cold Spring community.
Warmly,
Dr. Amy Alzina

5th Grade Westmont College Science Lab Trip
Cold Spring fifth grader students had an unforgettable morning at the Westmont College science lab, where they explored chemical reactions through hands-on experiments led by Professor Haines and his team. Students learned about chromatography, the effects of liquid nitrogen, and how different substances interact on a molecular level. The morning ended on a sweet note with homemade vanilla ice cream made using leftover liquid nitrogen!
