sixth grade math

Dear Community,

Today, I had the privilege of observing an outstanding math lesson in our sixth-grade classroom, taught by the amazing Mrs. Orwig. Her lesson was thoughtfully designed to engage all learners, beginning with students actively working in Khan Academy with Khanmigo, which seamlessly aligns with the Open Source sixth-grade materials, before transitioning into a collaborative, discussion-based direct instruction session.

What truly stood out was Mrs. Orwig’s commitment to differentiated instruction, ensuring that every student received the support they needed to thrive. After delivering a whole-group lesson, she worked closely with small groups, providing targeted support while the instructional assistant extended learning opportunities for advanced students through enrichment activities. Khan Academy lessons were seamlessly integrated as formative assessments, reinforcing key concepts and ensuring that every student achieved mastery before progressing.

Beyond academics, this lesson exemplified the heart of Cold Spring School—a learning environment where students are supported, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential. A huge shoutout to Mrs. Orwig for creating such a structured, engaging, and dynamic classroom where every student has the opportunity to succeed! 💙✨

My Best,

Dr. Alzina
