Remembrance of 1/9 Debris Flow Set for Tuesday, January 9th
You're warmly invited to our student-led "Kindness and Love" Morning Assembly on Tuesday, January 9th, at 8:25 AM. This gathering holds special significance for our community and particularly our sixth graders as we honor the memories of Peerawat "Pasta" Sutthithepa, a former Cold Spring Kindergarten student, and Sawyer Jane Baker Corey, a Cold Spring Sixth grade student. Both were sadly lost in the January 9th debris flow six years ago. At lunchtime, our sixth graders will be at the Gazebo, facilitating art activities with a "Friendship" picture frame build and chalk drawings. The day will conclude with the annual tradition of ringing the school bell 23 times in the evening, each ring symbolizing one of the 23 lives lost in the tragedy.
I have posted the January 9th Community Remembrance press release that went out today regarding the evening events for your review.
“In observance of the six-year anniversary of the 1/9 debris flow, the community is invited to attend a commemorative ceremony called Raising Our Light, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Montecito Union School, 385 San Ysidro Road.
Community members will gather in the school courtyard for a short program of speakers and reading of the names of the 23 people lost on Jan. 9, 2018.
Bells will ring out 23 times from local churches and schools; Montecito firefighters will light 23 candles in honor of the lives lost; and there will be a moment of silence together.
A searchlight will be illuminated as a beacon of community support and solidarity from Montecito Union School.
Raising Our Light is a collaborative effort by the Montecito Community Partnership Team including Montecito Association, Montecito Journal, Montecito Union School District, Cold Spring School District, Montecito Fire Protection District, Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade, and the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness.
It is normal to experience feelings of fear, anxiety, and sadness at the anniversary of a disaster, notes the Community Wellness Team (CWT), which was created to support residents following the Thomas Fire and 1/9 debris flow.
CWT representatives will be at the Raising Our Light ceremony to provide support for anyone in need or looking to connect. Community members can contact the CWT at any time at 805-364-2750.”
