Family Literacy Night

NEW EVENT!!!!  Family Literacy Night and Dinner This Friday!

Bilingual children’s author Leticia Ordaz will be conducting an all school literacy assembly during the school day on Friday, April 14th.  During the assembly, every kindergarten student will receive a copy of her book, Macaw’s Palenta Adventure.  Every first through sixth grade student will receive a copy of her book, the Carousel King.

After school, students will have an opportunity to meet the author and participate in a few fun outdoor literacy activities directed by a few classroom teachers from 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM.  Super Cucas Taco Dinner will be served immediately after the activities.  DJ Gavin Roy will provide music from 4:00PM-6:00 PM.  Students will also have an opportunity to play in a Bounce House and purchase a snow cone from the Snowcone truck.  I can’t think of a better way to kick off Spring!

Dolphin Center:  We are looking forward to seeing all our families during our Family Literacy Night.  All students not accompanied by an adult will be automatically checked into Dolphin Center.  This includes all upper grade students. We don’t have the staff capacity to monitor children not accompanied by an adult.  We also want to ensure the event remains well organized.  Dolphin Center check-in and check-out will be in Room 4.

Creative Hat Day

The Student Council is encouraging all students to wear a creative hat to school on Friday, April 14th.  Let your child’s creative juices flow!

Book Exchange: Friday, April 21st

Book Exchange Collection: Thursday, April 13 - Thursday, April 20

This year, CSS will hold their annual book exchange on FRIDAY April 21st. For new families, every April we hold a book exchange in honor of Earth Day!  Students spring clean their home libraries and bring in books to swap. Teachers will have a collection box inside their room and students can bring in books (20 books maximum) starting Thursday April 13th through the morning of Thursday April 20th.

The book exchange will take place on Friday the 21st during the school day for the students.  **Coming back this year is a parent/teacher book exchange element, so bring in your books  (5 books max for parents due to space in the classroom)  and we will have a table set up at the front gate on Thursday all day long for parents/staff to visit before, during and after-school!  This is a great way to recycle your books and find new treasures. All the leftover books will be donated to a local non-profit organization.  Please let me know if you have any questions: katie.szopa@gmail.com

Move-A-Thon

The Cold Spring Parent Club kicked off their Move-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit campus security today!  Their goal is to raise $30,000 to create a more secure entryway onto the campus.  You will find detailed information on the flier below, including the donation link to share with friends and family (https://www.parentsquare.com/f...).  Check out all the fun prizes students can win!

Important Reminder: No School on Friday, April 28

Please enjoy a day off with your family to get ready for the end of the year!

Arbor Day Celebration

On Tuesday, April 25th at 8:30 AM our TK/Kindergarten students will be planting an apricot and pomegranate tree after they sing a song about trees in support of our Arbor Day celebration.  Much gratitude to Santa Barbara Beautiful for donating the trees and Nathan Slack, Urban Forest Superintendent, for supporting our celebration.

Board Highlights from the April 10, 2023 Board Regular Session Meeting

  • Dr. Alzina announced the Literacy Night Community Event happening on Friday, April 14th from 3:00 - 6:00 PM. Author Leticia Ordaz will be there to autograph student books, teachers will have activities for students, SB Public Library Van will be available for students to check out books, there will be music, bounce houses, and a free community taco dinner.

  • Arbor Day will be celebrated at Cold Spring on April 25th. The Kindergarten students will be planting two fruit trees in the school garden.

  • Dr. Alzina and Mr. Calderon will attend the upcoming Legislative Action Day at the state capitol. Mr. Calderon is leading a team of administrators from ACSA to attend meetings with state legislators to lobby for important small school issues.

  • Mr. Calderon gave an update regarding the new building project to the Board. After delays due to weather, the project is underway again. This week footings for the building are being prepared.

  • Mr. Calderon reported the progress of the school kitchen renovation project. Work was done over Spring Break to prepare the kitchen for the installation of the commercial hood. The kitchen renovation will be completed over the summer and ready to serve meals for the next school year. Mr. Calderon is working to secure grants that will reimburse the bulk of the expenses of the kitchen renovation.

  • The Board discussed campus safety issues. The administration is working with parents to raise money to build a more secure entryway in the front of the school. Proceeds from this year's Move-A-Thon will be donated to the entryway project. Two more cameras will be installed by Sycamore Canyon Road for more visibility around the campus.
