This is just a reminder to pick-up your registration packet for the 2017-2018 school year in the front office. I have inserted in this post my cover letter that is included in the packet which highlights very important happenings and upcoming events.

Greetings New and Returning Cold Spring School Parents!

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying your summer! There is so much to share with you about what we’ve been up to this summer, and all of the beginning-of-school activities you need to know about to prepare for the 2017-2018 school year. 


We’ve been very busy this summer preparing our campus facilities for the new school year. Our biggest project has been the repair and re-installation of the roof over Rooms 4 & 5, the Teacher’s Lounge/Kitchen, and the bathrooms adjacent to the Auditorium. Fortunately, we were able to use Bond funds to pay for this expense. We’re also cleaning all the classrooms and carpets, painting exterior walls, replacing the ramp leading to the Art Room, repairing the asphalt outside Rooms 2 & 3, and making improvements to our landscape/grounds.


We’re making big changes in our Business Office. It is a joy and an honor to introduce our new Business Manager, Dr. Maria Santa Cruz, who began her position on July 17th. Dr. Santa Cruz’s formal education is extensive and varied and includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior-Architecture from Woodbury University, a Master of Business Administration (with concentrations in Management & Leadership and International Business) from La Verne University, a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Cal State, Northridge, and a professional certification as a Chief Business Official from the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO).  She also holds some California teaching credentials.

Dr. Santa Cruz completed her Chief Business Official practicum in the Oxnard Union High School District where she performed the daily responsibilities and role of a Chief Business Official. Dr. Santa Cruz is an accomplished business owner and professional practitioner in the fields of architectural design and construction, and has more than ten years of experience in business administration, accounting, management, and operations.  

During my time spent with Dr. Santa Cruz so far, I have observed her to be a dynamic problem solver and self-driven individual with a leadership approach that emphasizes accountability, transparency, and a high level of work ethics. I am confident that Dr. Santa Cruz’s experience and expertise are a great fit for our school and our community, and will enable us to more clearly communicate the fiscal operations of the District.

We are currently seeking applicants for the position of a full-time Account Technician to assist Dr. Santa Cruz in the Business Office and hope to have that position filled promptly.


In order to improve communication throughout our school, we have eliminated the school list-serve and have replaced it with ParentSquare. You will soon receive an invitation, via either email or text, to join ParentSquare. Please click on the provided link to activate your account. Included in this packet is a letter explaining what ParentSquare is as well as tips for its successful use. I have been using ParentSquare for the past five years and I have found it to be an effective and essential tool to support communication within the school. 

School Site Council

We will be forming a new School Site Council for the 2017-2018 school year and we need parents and District community members to get involved! The School Site Council is responsible for creating and monitoring the Single Plan for Student Achievement and the School Emergency Plan, among many other duties. If you or someone you know would like more information and/or would like to get involved, please contact me. Voting for the parent and District community member positions (of which there are a total of five open seats) will occur during Back-to-School Night on September 6th.

Beautification Day – Saturday, August 12th, 9 am – 12 pm

The Parent Club is hosting a “Beautification Day” on Saturday, August 12th from 9am - 12 pm. All Cold Spring families and District community members are invited to bring their own gardening/cleaning tools to contribute to the effort. I am looking forward to working together as a community to help make our school beautiful!  

Class Lists Posted – Friday, August 18th, 2:00 pm

We will be posting class lists and room assignments on Friday, August 18th at 2:00 pm outside the school office.

Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten Round Up– Friday, August 18th, 9 am – 11 am

I look forward to meeting our TK/Kindergarten students and parents on Friday, August 18th from 9 am – 11 am at the TK/Kindergarten Round Up.  During this time, all TK/Kindergarten students will get an opportunity to see their new classroom (Room K), meet their teacher, and participate in a few activities. Meanwhile, the parents can join me in the Library to get an overview of the school and learn how they can get involved with the many volunteer opportunities. Our kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Ishikawa, is very excited to meet your child!  

Popsicles on the Playground Meet and Greet – Friday, August 18th, 2 pm – 3 pm 

The Parent Club is sponsoring a “Meet and Greet” on the playground from 2 pm -3pm for all TK-6th grade students and families! Enjoy a cold popsicle and then meet your child’s/children’s teacher(s) for the new school year. 

First Day of School – Monday, August 21st, beginning at 8:25 am  

Our first day of school is Monday, August 21st. School begins promptly at 8:25 am for all students. The school day (every day except Wednesdays) ends at 2:00 pm for TK/Kindergarten**, 2:40 pm for 1st & 2nd grades, and 3:00 pm for 3rd - 6th grade. Every Wednesday is early dismissal for all students: TK/Kindergarten at 1:45 pm, 1st & 2nd grades at 1:55 pm, and all 3rd - 6th grade students at 2:30 pm. 

** Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are dismissed at 11:30 am every day during the first three weeks of school. The extended day program begins on Monday, September 11th.

“Welcome Back” Superintendent/Principal Coffee – Monday, August 21st, beginning at 8:30 am  

Everyone is invited to my first informal Superintendent/Principal coffee on Monday, August 21st at 8:30 am in the Gazebo. This is a great opportunity for you to meet new families, the Governing Board, and the presidents of the Parent Club and the Cold Spring Foundation. Coffee and light breakfast items will be provided.  

Beach Blanket Back-to-School BBQ – Thursday, August 24th, 5 pm – 7:30 pm

The Parent Club is hosting an all school BBQ dinner on Thursday, August 24th from 5 pm - 7:30 pm. The adult menu will include a pulled-pork or pulled-chicken sandwich with a side and a drink for $10, while the children can enjoy a sandwich or hot dog and a drink for $5. All families are also invited to bring their own food. Everyone is invited to bring a blanket, enjoy great food and friendship, play a game of BINGO, and meet our new dolphin mascot. Please RSVP with the number of family members to our Parent Club President, Erin Goligoski, at so we can ensure we have enough food for everyone.   

Back-to-School Night – Wednesday, September 6th, beginning at 6 pm 

All families are formally invited to attend our annual Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 6th beginning at 6 pm in the Auditorium. I will introduce this year’s staff and share how we will be striving to instill the three basic elements of intrinsic motivation -- PLAY, PASSION and PURPOSE -- in every child. 

My presentation will be followed by a visit to your child’s/children’s classroom(s) where every teacher will be presenting his/her yearlong plans and goals for your child.
